Where do I even begin...
Last I left my lil blog, I was really nervous to leave my babies for a quick 24 hour-trip back to MN for my little brother's wedding reception. Despite having little man just 2 1/2 short weeks ago, I was feeling well enough and quite determined to keep my word. Plus my babies would be in excellent care of my Hubs and MIL.
I told myself "Hey, it's 24 hours where you don't have to worry about feeding, diaper changes, or anything for that matter. Just RELAX!"
Well. I was not on the ground in MN for more than 1 hour when I got the call from my husband: Our dog had bit Morgan on the FACE, it looked pretty bad, there was a lot of bleeding, and it was extremely close to her eye. My MIL was taking her to the ER and had someone coming over to watch Joey.
To say I was hysterical is an understatement. Meanwhile, my husband and I agreed that we needed to get the dog, Dakota, out of our house ASAP. I called the Greyhound rescue group we adopted her from and explained what had happened. Out of sheer panic, I told them they either come and get her NOW or she would be destroyed. End of story. (Mama Bear in action!)
I was trying to deal with the fact that I was stuck in MN for the whole night, supposed to be having fun at my brother's wedding reception, and all I could think of was my sweet baby girl. The tests and poking and prodding they would have to do to her, and all she probably wanted was her Mama... and I wasn't there for her. How bad was it? Would she have scarring? Was her vision damaged? It didn't help matters that I didn't get any cell reception in the reception hall. I had to keep going outside to call and get updates from my Hubs and MIL.
In the ER, they consulted an Opthalmologist and couldn't tell if Morgan's tear duct was damaged or not; they wanted to perform a test where they'd have had to sedate her and snake a tube up her nose to test the functionality of her duct; and even then they couldn't be sure that would tell them what they needed to know. Um, we said absolutely not. They were able to determine her eye and vision were fine.
After several hours, she was sent home on some ointment and antibiotics. By the time I got home last night, it was looking a million times better. Today it just looks like a good scratch, scabbed over, with some bruising around her eye.
Once the dust settled and my hysteria dissolved (and I knew my baby girl was really truly OK), I had a rational talk with my Hubs & MIL. We are not sure exactly WHAT happened; we don't even know if it was in fact, a bite, but are thinking the dog hit Morgan with her paw because there were other bruises above her eye -- and maybe it was a claw mark that caused the damage. If it were a bite, the damage probably would've been a lot worse. My MIL didn't see it happen, but was about 5 feet away at the time. Dakota was very shaken up by the whole thing and within 2 hours, someone from the Greyhound group had come to pick her up and take her away to a temporary home.
All night I struggled with wondering if I could ever look at our dog the same again; I couldn't trust her around babies anymore, even if it was purely an innocent accident. But I hated the thought of her leaving our family because she has been such a wonderful dog. She probably has no idea what she did wrong. I've been feeling guilty for a long time now that she's no longer a priority; ever since Morgan was born, she's gotten the shaft. No more trips to the dog park...no more long walks....no more rough playing in the house...I'm always yelling at her for something it seems, even though she doesn't do anything wrong. She's just a big dog who is playful.
As of right now, we are trying to find a happy ending to this matter. My MIL offered to take her, that way she would still be part of our "family", but not in our house. We could still visit her and she'd have room to run out in the country, instead of being confined in a house with 2 babies.
On top of THAT drama...when all I wanted to do was get home IMMEDIATELY to my baby, my flight home was a disaster. I began traveling at 7am. Should've been home by 1pm. We couldn't land in Cincinnati due to storms, so we circled several times. And then they sent us to Lexington where we sat for over 2 hours on the hot stuffy plane, grounded. We finally flew back to Cinci and I got home about 4 hours later than planned. Ugggh.
There are some positives though; I got to see my MN family and celebrate my brother and his new wife. It was so fun to see them so happy! And I got to see a lot of cousins and other family I hadn't seen in a long time. And most of all, my baby girl was truly OK.
And there were even some funny moments too, like when I had to pump...there was NO PLACE to pump in private at this wedding reception (without tying up the 1 bathroom!), so I opted to do it in the car, after dark. I forgot my hooter hider - or any other covering - so I prayed I could just remain inconspicuous and get it done. I accidently hit one of the locks on the car and set off the car alarm. Next thing I know, the inside lights are ALL on, the horn is honking and the lights on the outside are blinking. And I couldn't get the darn thing to shut off for like 3 minutes. OH, did I mention my dress was down around my waist? LOL...I couldn't make this up!
I'm off to love on my babies some more and enjoy my coffee. It's good to be home.
